Are you able to switch off while on holiday? 25/08/2011

With an array of devices allowing us to work anywhere, and at any time, can employees totally switch off from their job while on holiday?

For many people, the summer getaway is a long awaited break – planned and anticipated for many months. However while waiting in the airport to jet off to a sunny destination or while lying under a palm tree on the beach, the temptation to check emails and messages from work is too much for some.

A recent survey of 2,500 managers from The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) has revealed that over a third of respondents work while on holiday. In fact, 80% frequently respond to emails, almost half take phone calls and one in ten even go into the office while on holiday. Unsurprisingly the study also revealed that 40% of people returning to the office felt more stressed than when they left!

While technology means that it is easier than ever to work remotely, it also makes it extremely hard to switch off. Holidays are there to give the employee much needed time away from the office and to re-energise. Many staff however, are keeping one eye on their job at all times. Workers may feel they are just being conscientious but this inability to disconnect can be detrimental.

At CBSbutler we understand the need to get away from the pressures and stresses of work and actively encourage our employees to enjoy their time off. The team work closely together to provide the best service possible and the business is structured to allow the continuation of work regardless of personal holiday leave. Our staff are not made to feel guilty for disconnecting while away, rather they are encouraged to do so!

Are you able to switch off while on holiday? Do you feel guilty or pressure to stay in touch at all times? Let us know what you think.

Commuting hell 31/05/2011

A recent article in HR Magazine caught my eye. Why? It cited a survey by Regus which found that over a third of participants spent in excess of 45 minutes commuting each day.  Luckily for me, I don’t fall into this category.

But for those who do spend long periods of time commuting, it can be a horrible experience.  Stuck on a packed, often delayed train, or in motorway traffic.  It seems a good commute these days are few and far between.    This is no good for an individual, but also a business. Arriving stressed after a lengthy journey is not the best basis for a productive day.

So why do the workforce face such lengthy commutes into the office? It appears that far too many people believe that the route to a successful career lie in our big cities. (more…)

I recently appeared in Recruitment International discussing the reasons why recruiters need to take a long hard look at their “people strategy”, if they want to recruit and retain high quality staff and be seen as employers of choice.

The image of recruitment as a career has improved over the last few years; however some parts of the industry are still perceived as high pressured, long hours and money orientated. For recruiters to overcome this negative image it essential for organisations to create an employer brand that cultivates a high performance culture that all employees can buy into. Employees who are enthusiastic and inspired will in turn create loyalty, aid attraction and improve retention. Recruitment is a people business, so obviously we either succeed or fail on the quality of our own people. (more…)

A recent survey suggests that employers encouraging employees to socialise down the pub could be contributing to poor health problems – through excessive alcohol consumption.   However, although social events for employees generally revolve around the pub both employers and employees are unconvinced that these events are a positive way to develop healthy working relationships.

So with this in mind, we like to be a bit different here!  Recently a group of our staff set sail on the Solent to enjoy a day’s boating courtesy of our generous boss who won the excursion in a charity auction.

After being taken to Southampton, they boarded the boat for some lunch, drinks and a leisurely meander before mooring up by the shore where they were able to improve their jet ski-ing skills. (more…)

Only 24% of employees are engaged with their job. This was the finding in the recent Gallup Engagement Survey and following these findings, the CBI reports that employee engagement is the biggest problem facing employers.  So what should employers being doing to change this and more importantly why is this happening?

According to David Macleod, author of the Macleod Report to Government on Employee Engagement,  many employers spend a lot of time ensuring that their employees have a good work/life balance which is positive but has no real impact on employee engagement. Employers need to address the real issues which are trust and management.  The biggest influence on whether an employee is engaged is the relationship they have with their manager.  Managers that cannot bring out the best in their employees risk losing them.

According to our recent survey, 57% of organisations we asked felt that employers should be taking an active interest in their staff’s health and wellbeing and 25% believed that it was a personal choice and nothing to do with the employer. So what should employers really be doing? Of course no one can or should be forced into maintaining a healthy lifestyle either inside or outside of the workplace and here at CBSbutler we are doing our bit for those of our staff who do wish to maintain healthy lifestyle. After all there is substantial evidence to suggest that a healthy office is a more productive office. (more…)
