As September fast approaches, we’re getting ready to attend the Defence and Security Equipment international exhibition (DSEi). Between the 13th and 16th September, we’ll be at the ExCel centre in London meeting professionals at this leading event.
The event will see 1,300 exhibitors presenting new equipment, services and systems to the world’s defence and security industry. We have a long record as a provider of contract and permanent staff for international and UK defence jobs covering the battlefield, marine and aerospace domains, so exhibiting at the DSEi is a great platform for us to meet and network with new people.
With a client list that includes the MOD, major defence engineering contractors and consortiums, consultants, component vendors and system integrators, we are highly anticipating the opportunity to make contact with the industry’s best talent. The DSEi exhibition presents a rare opportunity to interact with a huge number of defence sector professionals – in fact the last event saw 28,000 attendees. And whether they’re looking to take on staff or seeking a new career move for themselves, we can’t wait to meet them (more…)

We’ve blogged before about the lack of female engineers, and new research suggests more needs to done. A survey by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) found that there has been little progress made in encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering.
The study revealed that the number of women in engineering jobs has stayed almost the same since 2008, at six per cent of the total engineering industry. This compares to five per cent four years ago. Figures also show just three per cent of technicians in the UK are women, a drop from five per cent in 2008. (more…)

It’s been a busy few weeks here at CBSbutler; we attended the Recruitment Consultant Awards last week and the SATRO festival of science and engineering the day before. Despite the weather doing its very best to get in the way, the festival was a success.
We have been involved with the SATRO charity for some years now, and have been supporting the festival which aims to educate and encourage the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). This year, we sponsored the Working World Marquee which showcased local businesses including Balfour Beatty, Army Engineers, GlaxoSmithKline, and Frazer-Nash. (more…)

The annual Recruiter Awards for excellence took place this week, and what a night it was! For the fourth time we took home the trophy for ‘Best Engineering Recruitment Agency’ and we were highly commended in the ‘Best Client Service’ category.
The awards bring together both agencies and in house recruitment teams and celebrates the best achievers over the last twelve months, and there were certainly some great businesses present this year! Our ever growing trophy cabinet may well need an extra shelf soon, but on a serious note winning the award is a huge achievement for us. And one I am incredibly proud of. (more…)
Pledge for more apprenticeships – is it realistic? 11/04/2011

A key announcement in the Budget was the pledge to invest a further £180m to create 50,000 more apprenticeships this year, bringing the total to 360,000. A welcome announcement to advocates of apprenticeships, which I for one certainly am.
In fact, I have blogged before about the benefits, especially in the engineering sector. In an industry crying out for talent, an apprenticeship can provide valuable experience and skills, not to mention an alternative route into a career that would usually require a university degree at huge cost. However, a recent article in the Telegraph suggests that the pledge made by Osborne is no more than ‘window dressing’. (more…)

Did you know that only 7% of engineers in the UK are women? This is the lowest number of women professionals in this sector in Europe – compared to 18% in Spain, 26% in Sweden and 20% in Italy. This research has been carried out by the UKRC, the leading UK organisation working to promote women’s participation in science, engineering and technology.

A recent report, led by professional services firm KPMG, declares “the jobs market is on the road to recovery”. In particular it states that December saw the biggest increase in demand in 6 months for temporary staff in the engineering sector. The report also shows that employers within this sector are experiencing a shortage of skills in permanent staff.

I am delighted to announce that we have won the ‘Best Recruitment Company to Work for £40-£100M’ category at this year’s Recruitment International awards! Another award to add to our ever growing collection!
I am absolutely ecstatic to have won this award, especially as our staff played a part in us winning! I believe we won the category through a mixture of the exceptionally high employee survey results – 92% overall satisfaction rating, the high regard from clients – 72% of them rated the agency better than the competition, plus the stimulating opportunities we offer staff that keeps them happy, dedicated and inspired in their roles. Offering individuals a stimulating career and not just a job is what’s important to us.
Is it doom and gloom for the jobs market?? 13/08/2010

A recent CIPD survey has stated that the jobs market will stall as the demand for public sector jobs falls with 36% of them looking to lose staff. Posted on the BBC news website this all looks like doom and gloom and unfortunately when someone is being made redundant their radar for negative stories like this is on high alert.
So its times like these that we need some good news to instil confidence back into our job seekers.
For us here working in the private sector we are finding lots of reasons to be positive as we have some excellent roles available. Part of the reason for this is that we work across a range of robust sectors such as defence & aerospace, pharmaceutical, aviation, nuclear, rail and building services and have found that they have (and continue to be) reasonably stable.
So in the vein of reassurance here are a couple of hot (if only the same could be said of the weather!) jobs… (more…)
