Last week I went along to the APSCo debate on recruitment licensing – it was an interesting event with mixed opinions. Just over half of recruiters said that they wanted APSCo to explore the potential for licensing, with just over 40% voting against the move. It certainly seems to be an issue that divides people – some felt it would outlaw rogue agencies and boost industry standards, whereas others believed it would just increase bureaucracy.
Clearly, any initiative that raises the standards and removes unscrupulous operators from the recruitment industry will be well received. However, I’m not convinced that this is the right climate to promote additional business legislation and indeed when the government’s emphasis is on reducing red-tape. In addition, from my experience, licensing can create a fair degree of bureaucracy for organisations without necessarily combating rogue agencies or unscrupulous practices. I sit on the fence but remain un-convinced that this is the right time for championing or lobbying the proposed licence.
What are your thoughts – would you cast a vote for or against licensing? Leave your comments below.
