Why commute when you don’t have to? 27/10/2011

Travelling to and from work can be a daunting experience that many dread every day. Worrying if the public transport will arrive on time, how many delays will there be and if you’ll be stuck next to the antisocial person with terrible loud music is the least of your problems. Thousands of people commute, with the average Briton commuting for 54 minutes every day according to the Office for National Statistics. But why do so many people feel the need to endure a terrible journey everyday just to work in London?

There is a common misbelief that in order to further your career it is essential to only consider jobs in the capital, regardless of how long the commute is. However job prospects outside of London can provide careers that are just as stimulating and rewarding. Having worked in the West End and commuting for nearly nine years I have recently hung up my commuting shoes to progress my career at CBSbutler in Redhill, Surrey.

Working outside cities can not only enhance careers but can also help achieve a greater work life balance. Working and living locally provides much more manageable and pleasant working hours and environments allowing for less time travelling and more time to be spent with friends and family. Working at CBSbutler has provided me with so many benefits that London cannot compete with. I am able to cycle to work in the morning yet still work at a leading agency that offers real career prospects. CBSbutler provides competitive salaries to London and has a strong working culture. I no longer work in the West End of London and spend over an hour travelling each way, but I have a great job with better opportunities close to home, allowing me to spend more time with my wife and new baby daughter.

So why not consider a career outside London? CBSbutler is a multi-award winning recruitment consultancy specialising in engineering and technology fields throughout the UK and overseas. We have an enviable reputation for service excellence and a prestigious client base including many FTSE 100 companies. As a rapidly growing business we have opportunities for experienced recruitment consultants to join our successful team at our Redhill office. With only two months to go, preparations for the eleventh Festival of Science and Engineering are in full swing. We blogged at the end of last year with the great news that the festival was going ahead following a contribution of £10,000 from CBSbutler to SATRO, the charity behind it…

And ever since, we have been busy working alongside SATRO to publicise and organise the event. So with two months until the big day, we want to let you know what we will be doing and how to get involved. The festival aims to offer school teams the best possible opportunity to show the high quality of their science and engineering projects to guests from education, industry, commerce and professional bodies. The only criteria is that projects must have been devised and built during the current school year and come from Year 9 science clubs, GCSE, GNVQ, Diploma, AS, A2 or other areas of work.

There will also be plenty of opportunity for the pupils to get involved with some experiments in the Working World Marquee. Here are a few of the companies that will be exhibiting:

  • Army Recruitment with a ‘Bridge Building’ theme
  • Modern Water Plc with a ‘Water experiments  with surprising results’ theme
  • Air Products with a ‘Liquid nitrogen’ theme.

Stay tuned for the next update when we will be revealing some of the other businesses taking part this year. And if you are a school wanting to take part – it’s all free –click here for more details.

Work life balance – is it really all about commission and long hours? 14/01/2011

If you work in London, I’m sure you have experience of waking up at the crack of dawn, catching the standing room only 6.30am train and enduring that two hour journey to your office. You work extremely long hours under a great deal of stress and pressure, but getting that large pay packet at the end of the month makes it all worthwhile – right?

I am extremely proud to say that CBSbutler has saved the annual Festival of Science and Engineering! We have put forward the £10,000 needed by Surrey SATRO, the charity behind the Festival, to keep it alive.

In my eyes, the Festival is a major platform that is needed to promote STEM subjects to students in the Surrey area – to encourage and inspire them to study these subjects before eventually moving into a career within these fields. The Festival provides a brilliant opportunity for the scientists and engineers of tomorrow to show their peers and the local businesses just what they can do. (more…)

We hold a fireworks party each year at our head office in Redhill for our employees and their families. This year’s party was a great success – the food was tasty, the atmosphere was brilliant and the fireworks certainly went off with a bang!

We have organised a number of successful events throughout the years, which have received some great feedback from staff – we have been to the races, sailed on the Solent and had a private film screening in Soho.

I am delighted to announce that we have won the ‘Best Recruitment Company to Work for £40-£100M’ category at this year’s Recruitment International awards! Another award to add to our ever growing collection!

I am absolutely ecstatic to have won this award, especially as our staff played a part in us winning! I believe we won the category through a mixture of the exceptionally high employee survey results – 92% overall satisfaction rating, the high regard from clients – 72% of them rated the agency better than the competition, plus the stimulating opportunities we offer staff that keeps them happy, dedicated and inspired in their roles. Offering individuals a stimulating career and not just a job is what’s important to us.

Is it doom and gloom for the jobs market?? 13/08/2010

A recent CIPD survey has stated that the jobs market will stall as the demand for public sector jobs falls with 36% of them looking to lose staff.   Posted on the BBC news website this all looks like doom and gloom and unfortunately when someone is being made redundant their radar for negative stories like this is on high alert.

So its times like these that we need some good news to instil confidence back into our job seekers.

For us here working in the private sector we are finding lots of reasons to be positive as we have some excellent roles available.  Part of the reason for this is that we work across a range of robust sectors such as defence & aerospace, pharmaceutical, aviation, nuclear, rail and building services and have found that they have (and continue to be) reasonably stable.

So in the vein of reassurance here are a couple of hot (if only the same could be said of the weather!) jobs… (more…)

After months of planning the day of the Surrey SATRO festival arrived and what a day it was! Not only was the weather great but the day was enjoyed by all. We are going to dedicate our blog to the festival this week and share with our readers the events of the day.

We’ve mentioned previously that Jon Tickle was attending and to the school kids delight so he did! We managed to grab an interview with him where he told us why he is involved in Surrey SATRO and what he thought of the day. Enjoy!

I’ve been at CBSbutler since 2008 but before this like so many others did the weekday morning commute heading for an early start at my job as a recruitment consultant in London.

Despite the fact that Redhill has good accommodation, a great social life and infrastructure and a thriving local economy, too many skilled people have given up the idea of working here. And for companies like ours, that desperately need this level of talent to join our team and fuel growth, it’s a major headache. So, given the horror stories that pour out of practically any commuter at the slightest provocation, I’m not sure why so many people spend up to two hours hiking backwards and forwards to town every day?  (more…)
