Employees facing increased pressure and job insecurity at work 12/08/2011

The latest CIPD statistics showed that employees are facing increased pressure at work, as well as worrying for their jobs. The report also showed that they have little trust in senior managers, preferring instead to follow the lead of their direct line managers.

Here at CBSbutler, we think the value of employee satisfaction is immeasurable. If workers are unhappy, then productivity goes down, absenteeism goes up and the company is less productive (and enjoyable to work for) as a whole.

All of these factors would seem to stem from one root cause: a serious lack of communication within the company. So how can companies open dialogue with their employees in order to restore trust, manage workloads and provide reassurance? (more…)

Power sharing key to employee engagement 17/06/2011

A recent article in HR Magazine examining employee engagement has emphasised that the key to achieving it lies in power-sharing. If businesses want to engage with staff, they need to devolve some elements of the decision-making process to them.

With the launch of the Employee Engagement Task Force by the Government, engagement practices are being evaluated by many companies.  The Task Force aims to share good practice, generate debate and offer support via a new website. Working with leading academics, practitioners and think tanks, the Task Force will report back next year on the strategies it recommends organisations adopt to promote best practice and learning. Scared of social media? 28/04/2011

At the recent Social Media in Recruitment Conference, I enjoyed listening to a presentation about how the British Army use social media. Here at CBSbutler, social media is an integral part of our recruitment strategy. We use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to recruit talent for ourselves, but also to highlight the vacancies our clients have.

The presentation from the British Army is a great example for all those who are afraid to use social media. I often hear sceptics saying that it has no place in the workplace and reasons why include the worry that it can instantly ruin a brand’s reputation, a lack of knowledge, and a lack of time. They are all valid reasons, however with a bit of planning social media doesn’t have to be a cause for concern. In fact, it can strengthen a brand, save costs, and is easy to use once you know the basics.

Here are the key themes I took from the presentation:

  • Social media is all about engaging with your target audience. This hits the nail on the head – there is no point in trying to attract employees if you do not engage in conversation with them.
  • If using Facebook to connect with candidates – use segmentation techniques to target different candidates, and the use of games really drives engagement.
  • If you want to really show a candidate what a vacancy is like, allow existing employees in this role to Tweet or blog about their experiences in that position. For example, the Army train their frontline soldiers how to use Facebook & twitter so they can explain to candidates what their job is like.
  • You will not understand or be able to measure any return on investment unless you know why you are using social media in the first place.

So for those of you that are still sceptical, do your research, and bear in mind if front line soldiers can do the job they do and engage with candidates through social media – surely you can do too?

Are you satisfied with your manager? 25/03/2011

A recent headline about employees not respecting their managers caught my eye.  The article discusses a survey of 2000 adults in the UK carried out by People 1st.

The survey showed that 36% of respondents felt their manager didn’t provide clear instructions and 23% simply disliked their manager.  Another question revealed that almost half of respondents didn’t believe management did enough to develop their career, and almost a third thought their manager talked down to them.

At CBSbutler we work very hard to ensure all staff are not only motivated by management, but also rewarded and regularly spoken to about their progression through the business.  In an often hectic industry like recruitment, it’s easy to get sidetracked by targets or the worry of getting a candidate placed in time for a client deadline.  We know this all too well, but what we also appreciate is how valuable our staff are – after all without them the targets wouldn’t be met! Did you know that only 7% of engineers in the UK are women? This is the lowest number of women professionals in this sector in Europe – compared to 18% in Spain, 26% in Sweden and 20% in Italy. This research has been carried out by the UKRC, the leading UK organisation working to promote women’s participation in science, engineering and technology.

‘Training valued by employees, overlooked by employers,’ was a headline that caught my eye this week.

According to a recent survey of 700 individuals conducted by a training provider, 57% were being denied funding by their employer for skills development, and 49% were not permitted to take time out of the office to receive invaluable training.

This shocked me. All successful companies know that if your staff are receiving the right training, they are being nurtured and developed into being the best that they can be, and they can positively apply their new found skills and experience to help make your business a success. (more…)

Each January we hold our annual ‘kick off’ meeting. The whole company attends the off-site get together to celebrate and highlight the 2010 key achievements and the objectives for the year ahead.

It is a good way of sharing experience and knowledge, and communicating honestly and transparently so everyone knows what’s going on, feel involved and part of the team.

Are we losing behaviour based skills to monetary rewards? 31/01/2011

There is no doubt that many recruiters join the industry because of the financial rewards, but in my opinion the emphasis on rewarding only hard financial targets is flawed. For one thing, it can encourage and lead to a purely monetary focus at the expense of other qualitative skills including team work, managing change, problem solving and customer focus; which to me are fundamental to the operation and success of a business.

If you work in London, I’m sure you have experience of waking up at the crack of dawn, catching the standing room only 6.30am train and enduring that two hour journey to your office. You work extremely long hours under a great deal of stress and pressure, but getting that large pay packet at the end of the month makes it all worthwhile – right?

The importance of employer brand 23/12/2010

I recently appeared in Recruitment International discussing the reasons why recruiters need to take a long hard look at their “people strategy”, if they want to recruit and retain high quality staff and be seen as employers of choice.

The image of recruitment as a career has improved over the last few years; however some parts of the industry are still perceived as high pressured, long hours and money orientated. For recruiters to overcome this negative image it essential for organisations to create an employer brand that cultivates a high performance culture that all employees can buy into. Employees who are enthusiastic and inspired will in turn create loyalty, aid attraction and improve retention. Recruitment is a people business, so obviously we either succeed or fail on the quality of our own people. (more…)
