As September fast approaches, we’re getting ready to attend the Defence and Security Equipment international exhibition (DSEi). Between the 13th and 16th September, we’ll be at the ExCel centre in London meeting professionals at this leading event.

The event will see 1,300 exhibitors presenting new equipment, services and systems to the world’s defence and security industry.  We have a long record as a provider of contract and permanent staff for international and UK defence jobs covering the battlefield, marine and aerospace domains, so exhibiting at the DSEi is a great platform for us to meet and network with new people.

With a client list that includes the MOD, major defence engineering contractors and consortiums, consultants, component vendors and system integrators, we are highly anticipating the opportunity to make contact with the industry’s best talent. The DSEi exhibition presents a rare opportunity to interact with a huge number of defence sector professionals – in fact the last event saw 28,000 attendees.  And whether they’re looking to take on staff or seeking a new career move for themselves, we can’t wait to meet them (more…)

Scared of social media? 28/04/2011

At the recent Social Media in Recruitment Conference, I enjoyed listening to a presentation about how the British Army use social media. Here at CBSbutler, social media is an integral part of our recruitment strategy. We use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to recruit talent for ourselves, but also to highlight the vacancies our clients have.

The presentation from the British Army is a great example for all those who are afraid to use social media. I often hear sceptics saying that it has no place in the workplace and reasons why include the worry that it can instantly ruin a brand’s reputation, a lack of knowledge, and a lack of time. They are all valid reasons, however with a bit of planning social media doesn’t have to be a cause for concern. In fact, it can strengthen a brand, save costs, and is easy to use once you know the basics.

Here are the key themes I took from the presentation:

  • Social media is all about engaging with your target audience. This hits the nail on the head – there is no point in trying to attract employees if you do not engage in conversation with them.
  • If using Facebook to connect with candidates – use segmentation techniques to target different candidates, and the use of games really drives engagement.
  • If you want to really show a candidate what a vacancy is like, allow existing employees in this role to Tweet or blog about their experiences in that position. For example, the Army train their frontline soldiers how to use Facebook & twitter so they can explain to candidates what their job is like.
  • You will not understand or be able to measure any return on investment unless you know why you are using social media in the first place.

So for those of you that are still sceptical, do your research, and bear in mind if front line soldiers can do the job they do and engage with candidates through social media – surely you can do too?

A recent report, led by professional services firm KPMG, declares “the jobs market is on the road to recovery”. In particular it states that December saw the biggest increase in demand in 6 months for temporary staff in the engineering sector. The report also shows that employers within this sector are experiencing a shortage of skills in permanent staff.

Is it doom and gloom for the jobs market?? 13/08/2010

A recent CIPD survey has stated that the jobs market will stall as the demand for public sector jobs falls with 36% of them looking to lose staff.   Posted on the BBC news website this all looks like doom and gloom and unfortunately when someone is being made redundant their radar for negative stories like this is on high alert.

So its times like these that we need some good news to instil confidence back into our job seekers.

For us here working in the private sector we are finding lots of reasons to be positive as we have some excellent roles available.  Part of the reason for this is that we work across a range of robust sectors such as defence & aerospace, pharmaceutical, aviation, nuclear, rail and building services and have found that they have (and continue to be) reasonably stable.

So in the vein of reassurance here are a couple of hot (if only the same could be said of the weather!) jobs… (more…)

Being on a preferred supplier list (PSL) is always a more secure way to do business with clients and we are constantly striving to strengthen our relationships in this way.  Clients that have a preferred supplier agreement in place will use only those agencies on the list to fill their roles, so there’s a real benefit to us in doing this.  Not only in protecting our business but also to get to know our clients better.  Recently we’ve been working hard to sign up some of our best clients and are now pleased to announce that we’ve got the following clients on board:

  • After a thorough procurement process CBSbutler has been selected to join QinetiQ’s first tier Preferred Supplier List for Permanent hires. QinetiQ is one of the world’s leading defence technology and security companies.
  • CBSbutler has been selected as a 1st tier supplier to Emap, one of the fast growing business-to-business multiplatform media groups.
  • CBSbutler became one of the most successful companies supplying Selex Communications on a permanent basis and so they decided to make us a 1st tier supplier for their contract hire too.
  • The multi-million pound wireless test and measurement systems company Aeroflex have selected CBSbutler as 1 of only 3 companies to supply to them as 1st tier for both permanent and contract hire.
  • HP – the biggest IT services provider in the world has made us a full approved supplier provider for both permanent and contract hires for HP -

As of course it’s not just about new customers, but also continuing to work with existing clients so we’re pleased that Boeing, one of the fastest growing defence companies in the UK, has renewed our 1st tier supply agreement for another year.

Not only is this good news for us, but also our candidates who will get access to some great vacancies that may not be advertised elsewhere or with other agencies.

Security clearance guidance poses problems 18/05/2010

You may have seen our recent press release in various publications like Recruiter but in case you didn’t, here’s what you missed!

There have been recent press reports surrounding the issue of asking job seekers whether they have security clearance for a job in advance of offering them the placement- a practice that is against official Cabinet Office guidance. The REC recently said that: “Contract jobs in sensitive areas may require a security clearance; however this should not be seen as a pre-requisite for the posting. In many cases clients can wait for a candidate to be cleared and it is important that these jobs are open to as many contractors as possible.”

However, in a lot of cases this just isn’t workable (more…)
